Hatsumode in Asakusa 2026-2027

Spend a Japanese-style New Year in the heart of Tokyo

When
December 31st 2026 - January 7th 2027

The first visit to the shrine or temple in the new year is called Hatsumode, and it attracts quite some crowds every year, and I think it is a great way to start a new year in Japanese-style. Fireworks are the standard celebrations in many cities in the world, but in Japan it is mostly a cultural setting at a temple like the one in Asakusa, Senso-ji Temple, where the year begins with offering prayers for a prosperous year ahead. Warm crowds in the cold night of December 31, this is a unique experience to spend the early morning time of the new year.

And don't forget your etiquette!

The first visit to a shrine in the New Year is called Hatsumode and it attracts crowds at major locations all around Japan, Asakusa being one of the most prominent locations in Tokyo.
The orderly lined-up crowds start outside the Kaminarimon and continue all the way to Komagata square around 500 meters away. The lines proceed with extensive security staff helping the orderly process.
Crowds, prominently young couples, line up every year, and although most shops in the lane leading to the shrine are closed, a couple of shops do operate selling freshly prepared manju (Japanese dough buns, filled with sweet bean paste).
Go-jyuu-no-tou, the five story pagoda on 31st December, New Year's Eve. The illumination continues well into the morning of the new year, with no let up in the crowds on the next day.
Passing below the gate, crowds raise their hands to touch the red lantern. It can get pretty rough there at times, and to say the truth, I passed by without making an attempt to touch it.
The small streets on the sides of the shops are well guarded by security staff, and no person is allowed to trespass and get in between jumping the queue. That's Japanese orderliness and discipline...
