Hello Kitty is one of the most recognizable characters to come out of Japan, and was created by Sanrio in 1974. During that 50 year period she has evolved from a simple character into a global cultural icon, featuring on thousands of products, in TV shows and movies, and even as the inspiration behind theme parks like Tokyo's Sanrio Puroland and Oita's Harmonyland.

To celebrate half a century of all things Hello Kitty, the popular "When I Change, Kitty Changes Too" exhibition will head to the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum after its successful stint at the Tokyo National Museum. The event is said to be the largest-ever display of Hello Kitty-themed merchandise, original videos, and collaborative works with artists.

The event showcases a fun and nostalgic look at Hello Kitty’s evolution over the past five decades, with visitors able explore how Hello Kitty's fashion and style have changed throughout the years. Merchandise like handbags, mugs, and cameras will be on display, really giving some perspective as to how far Hello Kitty has reached. The exhibition also features new artwork by 30 artists under the theme "Me and Kitty," offering a fresh take on the beloved character.

If you're looking for a souvenir to commemorate your visit with, there will be a range of unique items – everything from event-exclusive plush toys to senbei (rice crackers) imprinted with Hello Kitty on them.

If you can't make the Okinawa event, never fear—the exhibition will head to the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art from late September through until early December of 2025.

*Please note that at the time of writing, ticket prices for the event have not yet been announced. The official site notes that advance ticket sales should be released sometime in January.
