Each fall from the last week of October to the first two weeks of November, the popular hot spring region of Akiu in Miyagi Prefecture is invaded by locals and tourists for a different reason: illuminated autumn colors.
The Akiu Night Museum light-up event is held at Tenshukaku Natural Park in Akiu Spa. It is a fun and unique way to see the seasonal colors at their best. The changing leaves are beautiful during the day, but the contrast of bright reds and golds contrasting with black shadows creates a magical atmosphere at night.
Admission and times change slightly each year. Generally, access is 17:00-21:00 with adult admission around 450 yen. Parking and check-in at Cafe Rocher.

Access via a 30-minute drive from JR Sendai Station or a 15-minute taxi ride from Ayashi Station via the Sanzan Line.
