Every August, the quiet town of Fujisawa in Ichinoseki City bursts into life with one of the region's most dramatic cultural events. Held on the second Saturday and Sunday of the month, the Fujisawa Noyaki Festival is a spectacular tribute to Japan's ancient Jomon heritage.

The event began in 1976, and was inspired by archaeologist Shiono Hanjuro's recreation of Jomon-era open burning techniques. Today, it has grown into a nationally renowned festival where visitors can witness the fusion of tradition, artistry, and sheer elemental power. One of the most moving sights is the moment the massive anagama kilns—each eight meters long—ignite in unison. The towering flames shoot skyward, illuminating the night and evoking the spirit of people who lived thousands of years ago.

Festival attendees can watch local junior high school students reenact the Jomon method of fire-starting, using the maigiri technique of friction to create embers. Around 1,000 pottery works, ranging from Jomon-inspired vessels to contemporary creations, are displayed and fired throughout the festival. By morning, the works are removed from the kilns and carefully judged, with top prizes awarded, including the prestigious Shiono Hanjuro Grand Prize.

Adding to the atmosphere are lively stage events, traditional foods, and the unique chance to taste Jomon-era cuisine.

Getting there

The festival takes place at the Fujisawa Sports Ground (Fujisawa Castle Ruins), which can be accessed in around 15 minutes by taxi from Semmaya Station.
