With persimmons ripening on the tree, the "Hut of Fallen Persimmons" has a certain elegance about it

From a short distance away, you can see the thatched roof poking out over the surrounding shrubs

京都嵯峨野、小倉山のふもと。茅葺屋根の「落柿舎」は、江戸時代の俳人、向井去来（むかいきょらい）の草庵跡である。去来の著作「落柿舎記」によると、庭の柿の木にたわわになっている柿の実を都から来た商人が買う約束をして帰ったのだが、その夜、庭の４０本の柿の木になる実全部が落ちてしまった。そこから名は付いた。この庵へは松尾芭蕉も三度訪れている。芭蕉は去来を第一の弟子として信頼したという。去来の死後、この庵は廃れたが死（１７０４年）後弟子が１７７０年に再建した。敷地内に立つ柿の木は樹齢３００年といわれ、芭蕉はこの柿の木を見たかもしれない。
