Best accessed by car (about two hours from Sapporo), the Shimamui Coast at Cape Shakotan offers wonderful views of the Sea of Japan (you'll quickly understand the reason for the catchphrase Shakotan Blue) . After walking through a narrow, dark tunnel (watch your head), you'll find yourself at a viewpoint worth a few minutes of your time and a few frames from your camera. Then, if you're up to a 10-minute hike, head down to the rocky beach to soak up the atmosphere. The trail is well maintained and manageable even for children, though good shoes will make things easier. Be sure to save energy for the return trip — unless you're planning to build a raft.

The towering rock structures are a sight to behold.

The main viewpoint is a short trip through this narrow tunnel.

Visitors pause for pictures before deciding whether to head down to the coast.

The hike takes about 10 minutes each way — depending on your speed — and follows a well maintained trail.

A rocky beach awaits at the base.

The coastline is dotted with rock formations like these.

There's no trail on this giant rock, so a picture will have to suffice.
