The Kamimizo Summer Festival is one of Sagamihara’s most cherished events, and it takes place in late July each year around Kamimizo Station on the JR Sagami Line.
Rooted in history dating back to the late Edo period, this festival has evolved into a grand spectacle, and is now recognized among the “50 Best Festivals in Kanagawa.” Visitors can expect a dazzling display of 16 portable shrines (mikoshi) and eight ornate floats parading through the streets, accompanied by the sounds of traditional drums and flutes. Food stalls and outdoor vendors line the festival route, ensuring there is plenty for everyone to enjoy.
Beyond the spectacle, the festival’s origins lie in prayers for protection from epidemics, good harvests, and community well-being. Last year, around 370,000 people attended, so expect a fun and lively atmosphere. Please note that the festival hours are different each day:
- Saturday, July 26th: 6pm to 8:30pm
- Sunday, July 27th: 2:30pm to 8:30pm
