Latest on Atomic Bomb Dome

At 8:15 AM on August 6, 1945, an atomic bomb exploded in the skies over Hiroshima. This famous dome (designed by Czech architect Jan Letzel) was 160 m southeast of ground zero. The explosion of air blasted off the buildings around it and intense thermic rays burnt to a crisp almost everything it touched. But the dome miraculously survived. It was saved from destruction because the pressure from the bomb came down right over the dome; the iron framework and some parts of the walls were left standing. It is probably Hiroshima's most famous and powerful icon.
